Raw food post workout shake

July 5th, 2011

When weight training, it is essential to follow up the workout with a good quality workout shake. My roommate makes shakes with whey protein powder and creatin. However, I prefer an all natural shake which doesn’t require me to take supplements with questionable side effects and will provide nutrients which you won’t get from whey protein or creatin.

A good post workout shake should contain protein for muscle recovery(0.2-0.4g/kg body mass), carbohydrates to rebuild muscle glycogen stores(approx 0.8g/kg body mass) and liquid to rehydrate the body. Fats should be avoided immediately following excercise because they can inhibit protein and carbohydrate uptake.

For a 80Kg guy like me that would be:

  • 16 – 32 grams of protein and
  • 64 grams of carbohydrate

I included the following ingredients in my Post workout shake.

  • Baby Spinach is rich in nutrients and contains large amounts of vitamin K, vitamin A , manganese, folate, magnesium, iron Vitamin C and other nutrients too numerous to list.
  • Crasins (dried cranberries)add taste and a good source of simple carbohydrates to the mix
  • Eggs good source or protein. Unfortunately they also contain colesterol and a high amount of fat. You could just use the whites but I am not prepared to waste food.
  • Avocado adds to the flavour and is a source of nutrients and high quality oils.
  • Unsweetened Almond Milk provides the liquid and is fortified with similar nutrients as found in milk.

Nutrition Breakdown

Quantity Ingredient Protein Carbohydrates Fat

Add all the ingredients to the blender, blend until smooth, and drink as soon after workout as possible.

As you can see the amount of protein is within the recommended range, carbohydrate is a bit low. I would recommend increasing the carbohydrate load by adding some honey.I would like to increase the carbohydrate load with a high glucose food. Dried fruit does contain a lot of sugar but it is fructose which is not as good as glucose.

I will continue to work on this shake to try and up the carbohydrate and protein content while keeping the fat content low.

Building a simple plywood canoe with stitch and glue

June 26th, 2011

I have recently become obsessed with the idea of boats and sailing. I have been working hard at a job that I hate,  in a town that I can’t stand, so the idea of sailing away over the horizon appeals to me. I am considering building a Wharram Catamaran when I get back to New Zealand. In the meantime I am in Canada as far from the sea as I could be. My roommate has been talking about rafting down the Peace River in Fort Saint John. No one in town rents canoes so I have decided to build a couple of simple Plywood Canoes using the stitch and glue method. This will be my first attempt at boat building and my goal in this case is to produce two functional canoes using as little time and money as possible. The process I will use is the same as in this video that I found on YouTube.

Dahab – Egypt

April 12th, 2010

Dahab is a backpacker heaven with a relaxed atmosphere and cheap food and acommodation. People tend to get stuck in this place and strories of short planed stays extending to month-long or year-long stays is not uncommon. I arrived in Dahab  at the beginning of april with the intention of staying for four days. It’s now been ten days and I have had a great time. Read the rest of this entry »

Simple WordPress Registration

March 14th, 2010

I have been using WordPress for a couple of weeks now and overall have been very impressed with how easy it is to work with.

However I have come to realise that the registration process should be made a lot easier to use. At present when a user registers they need to enter their email and then a random password is sent to them which they then have to use to log onto the site. This is bad for two reasons.

March 7th, 2010

Hi, welcome to my blog page. This is my first post ever. Let me know what you think of my new site. I built it  using the publishing software WordPress and created the template to give it my own look.

For the last month I have been holidaying in Egypt, staying with my cousin Tiago and windsurfing most days.
